What is Public Private Partnership (PPP)?
PPP typically constitutes a medium to long-term contract between public and private sectors, in which some of the services (infrastructures) that are the responsibility of the public sector are provided by the private sector. In such agreements, there will be a clear understanding of shared goals for the delivery of public infrastructure and/or public services.
Why PPP for Africa?
The African continent is widely viewed with suspicion, with charity and aid flooding into the continent used, in many cases, without transparency. We believe that “help” is not the answer. Help often comes with strings attached, and breeds a lack of transparency. Public Private partnership opportunities enable transparency and incentivises success for both the state and the private entity. There is no doubt that Africa requires extensive investment in infrastructure, which makes it a great opportunity for the private sector, which can offer expert knowledge and increased efficiency.
Improved infrastructure reduces business costs and encourages more small and medium sized enterprises to start trading, thus creating employment and boosting the economy.
Why is the Convention holding in Switzerland?
Switzerland is known to be politically neutral and it is no coincidence that it is home to the major NGO’s and aid agencies, including the UN. As a financial centre, Switzerland is in a prominent position to be able to invest in projects oversees. We are focusing our efforts here in order to change perspectives on Africa and promote the continent as a business opportunity rather than charity acceptors.
