Patrick Kamakia
SBM Kenya

After high school in 1993, Patrick Kamakia studied tourism management. He worked in that field for various tour companies before he discovered his love for agriculture-based tourism. His interest in this sector emanated from childhood experience growing up in a family coffee farm. Discovering his new area of interest, a field where he is now a specialist and an authority, Patrick realized the need for multiple international languages in order to be successful. He proceeded to Cannes, France to study French and thereafter to the Netherlands to study Dutch in order to be able to communicate with his international clients, most especially French and Dutch speakers.

Back in Kenya, he worked with the local farmers in conducting farm tours. Taking tourists to farms created new source of income for farmers. Before his innovative idea, most of this farmers had no idea of this new source of revenue or had admitted foreign visitors to farms freely. Now, with small entrance fee, farmer can earn additional income all year round. With the guided tour, tourists have firsthand information about the farms, processes and get a glimpse of economic opportunities in the local communities, a perfect platform for both the tourists and the farmers to derive win-win.

Within his service areas, farmers gain better understanding of the international communities, discovered new ways of doing things, most especially, the use of technology, value addition, match-making and new markets for their produce.

Patrick’s vision to economically empower local farmers in Kenya is a dream in the making.
